Yutyrannus huali Skeleton

Description

Skeletal reconstruction of the newly described (2012) tyrannosauroid Yutyrannus huali. This reconstruction is based on the nearly complete and well-articulated ZCDM V5000, with some details from ZCDM V5001. As with all my new skeletal reconstructions, this one started with tracings of the individual bones and appropriate roatation, repositioning, and un-deforming, followed by anatomical positioning and final drafting. Some details of the vertebrae are difficult to reconstruct with the published photos and images, so I'll probably update this in the not to distant future. The appendicular elements, skull, and basic proportions are accurate though. The filamentous feathers are found on the neck and along the humerus, as well as parts of the vertebral column. Longest are 20 cm along the neck, with 16 cm long filaments on the arm and vertebrae.
It's been proposed informally that this theropod is similar to Concavenator, especially in the skull. Comparison of the two shows that they really are not especially similar, since Yutyrannus has long legs, long arms, and a relatively shorter body than Concavenator, not to mention, no tall neural spines on the dorsal and caudal vertebrae. While both have skulls with formina on the nasals, there isn't much else about them that is similar.
